Meet Cam
Cameron Ombler-Vrey
Pro Sport Driver
Cam's passion for cars runs deeper than most. He was born into a world where tools and engines were as familiar as family, he spent his early years in his dad's old panel beating workshop, absorbing the ins and outs of car builds. The image of him as a toddler more fascinated by machinery than animals really sets the tone for his future.
By the time he was five, Cam was already behind the wheel, tearing up the drag strip alongside his sister. His need for speed and adrenaline was clear from a young age. Whether it was riding a home built drift trike down the steep hills of Wellington, participating in demo derbies, motorbike riding, or snowboarding, Cam was always chasing that thrill. At 15, he got his first real taste of drifting at the Brooklyn slipway in Wellington where he showed his natural talent in the family’s Holden Commodore.
From that point, Cam’s life became a fast-paced blend of passion and responsibility. He married his wife Zanie, started raising their three children—Nicholas, Amelia, and Daisy and continued to pursue his love for motorsports when he could. He gained his glazer apprenticeship at Glass Group and alongside mum and dad he was a key part to the build of the families' '67 Chevelle. By the age of 18, he was a racing the Chevelle down the drag strip. His children Nicholas and Amelia have since had seasons drag racing.
Throughout the years, when Cam wasn't racing he was in the garage, building, fixing, and improving his cars. His mechanical skills grew with each project, strengthening his understanding and knowledge .
In 2021, Cam’s passion for drifting took full form when he purchased and began building his C33 Laurel. He customized the car himself, piece by piece in his home garage turning it into a machine that would allow him to compete in tandem events. Cam began entering drift competitions like Showvember and Drift Wars, where he proved his ability to hold his own against seasoned drivers. These victories ignited a fire within him to pursue drifting at the next level.
By 2025, Cam achieved his dream and entered his first full season of D1NZ with the backing of his sponsors. His dedication, both on and off the track, paid off.
Cam’s time at the track isn’t just about racing. He’s hands on with everything including mechanical work, repairs, tyre changes and tuning. He is constantly immersed in the technical side of the sport. Away from the track, he’s at home with his family or back in the garage, continuing to tinker and refine his craft.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Cam’s journey has been the overwhelming support he’s received from fans, especially the younger generation. Interacting with spectators, signing autographs, and seeing his car on posters in kids' bedrooms has been a surreal experience for Cam. He never imagined that his journey would inspire the next wave of drifters.. For Cam, there’s nothing more fulfilling than hearing stories from young fans who look up to him and his car, and knowing that he's playing a part in shaping the future of drifting.
